In the Hot Seat, is our new business feature, getting to know successful business professionals from a variety of backgrounds and industries across Huddersfield. In the Hot Seat this week is Martin Mellor, Branch Director of EweMove Estate Agents Colne Valley, Lindley & Barkisland and Kirkburton & Denby Dale.

What was your first job?

I had a paper round from a young age, and I was also a Green Grocer!

What does your company do, and how does your role support the company goal?

I am Branch Director of 2 Ewemove Estate Agency Franchises in Huddersfield alongside my wife Shelly.  We also own several Vodafone mobile phone shop franchises in West Yorkshire.

If you weren’t in your current position, where would you be?

I’m sure I would still be in the corporate “grind”

Are you an early bird or a night owl?

Middle of the road, I wake up when I’m ready and go to sleep when I’m tired… when the kids let me of course.

What behaviour or personality trait do you most attribute your success to, and why?

I believe I have got great vision and tenacity with a good eye for numbers. Above that though, I have always built successful, hard-working teams and rewarded people well.

What is your proudest achievement (personal or work-related)?

Having a family and offering the things to them that we didn’t even know existed when we were kids.

If you could choose a superpower, what would it be?

I’d rather be Bruce Wayne – Rich, handsome, rock hard with loads of gadgets and a nice car!

What is your top tip for success in business/career?

Don’t be bullied – morals and ethics works both ways. Make sure you work with and find the right partners and people.

If you could snap your fingers and become an expert in something, what would it be?

Wine!

What’s your most-used emoji?

😂  – The crying face one!

What are your hopes for the future of Huddersfield (say, 10 years from now)?

That it is rationalised into something that is fit for the future. It is too stretched with too much retail space and too heavy a reliance on the University. We need more residential space and more opportunities in empty spaces for start-ups. Also smaller villages should continue to thrive like Lindley, Slaithwaite… That is what gives the small business community real opportunity.

What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?

I worry about everything 100% of the time, I have just become good at hiding it!

If you were to host a dinner party with three influential people (alive or deceased) who would you have dinner with and why?

1. My Dad – I miss him and never got chance to say goodbye. Although, he did not have the best table manners 😊

2. Sam Walton – Founder of Walmart….He was more of a visionary than Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk…..and I think he would have got on with my Dad

3. Shelley, my wife…why would she not come!

Who has influenced you most when it comes to how you approach your work?

My Parents – they worked hard so we could have what we have today. They were always 100% supportive and gave us the freedom to be who we are.

What would you do if you won the Lottery?

Not much differently. Maybe help others more where I could, buy a place in the sun sooner than I have planned and support the local community more. Fingers crossed for a win!
