Name, company and role:

Chris Barwick, Tax Manager at Sheards Accountancy

What does your company do, and how does your role support the company goal?

We are a firm of accountants who specialise in cloud accounting.  My role is to look after the tax function of the business, aiding individuals to fulfil their tax responsibilities, as well as advising on relevant changes and planning for the future.

What is your career background?

I initially started off working in accounts, and after a couple of years as an assistant accounts manager was requested to move into tax which is what I have now been doing for the past 20+ years.  I have worked with a wide variety of clients including world famous bands and singers, TV soap actors even a managing director of a major bank.

What makes your company stand out in your industry/sector?

At Sheards we have a forwarding-thinking approach and are proactive when working with clients, rather than reactive to rapidly changing situations.

What is your proudest achievement since being with the company?

The presentations I have done, either as training to a firm of estate agents or as part of our Connection events which are open to all.  A lot of time and effort goes in to these and the feedback is always good.

What is your top tip for success in business/career?

Don’t leave things until the last minute, get ahead of the game and be prepared, be it for changes in legislation, digitalisation, tax liability, buying or selling a property, retirement and estate planning.

Why are you passionate about being located in Huddersfield?

Traditionally the best thing about being in Huddersfield was the location of being situated between two major northern cities.  However, as we have become more digital, location has become less relevant. This means I can now enjoy working with clients both locally and throughout the world in a much more pleasant environment, because we are lucky to be surrounded by some stunning countryside.  Our clients also benefit because they get the same quality of work without having to pay big city prices.

What do you enjoy doing when not at work?

Spending time with family or binge watching a box set.
